I had great time reading the original series when I was kid - I admit- and I have no problem if a comic artist wishes to celebrate that which was great about A & O, but this is something that takes skill, self-awareness, and use of irony to some make it clear of its intentions. The people behind this production do not have this talent or failed here considerably. This is a production that I would neither show to young children, nor one that is worthy of the time needed to contextual it to older children (such as one might do with the the original series). Perhaps a lot was lost translation, but realizing now how violent, racist, and sexist, the original A & O book series was (like a lot of cartoons of its time), this newer animation fails to recognize its problematic history and to create a competent, ironic, 're-visioning' of the series; neither does it update the story to reflect modern values or to re-define the nature of the characters.
