Pollack had wanted to film in Cuba, but the US Government would not allow any money to be spent there, so the estimated $40 million budget went to Santo Domingo instead, where a lavish re-creation of a Havana street was built on an air force base. But despite the big budget, a strong cast and a good story the film was not a success at the box office, something Pollack found difficult to explain. Some critics have argued that the 'chemistry' was not right between Redford and Olin, others that it just wasn't in the same league as Bogart and Bergman'. Whatever. It is still well worth watching, and stands comparison with the other Pollack/Redford joint projects. And for film buffs, there is one small scene between Redford and Richard Farnsworth, who had spent most of his film career in stunts or as a bit player, before delivering an Oscar nominated performance at age 79 years in 'The Straight Story' (1999). Redford for an Oscar Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 2, 2018 Verified Purchase Bob Redford great acting as a professional gambler in this role.

Alan Arkin, for once, doesn't overact, and Pollack's direction is spot on Recreates 1958 Havana sublimely with an excellent eye for detail and makes the case for both Batista and Castro, even-handedly, being less than complimentary to both. Not sure about the postctript with Redford wandering on a beach many years later. The torture scenes and The Mob are both treated without drifting into parody or becoming gratuitously nasty. 4. 0 out of 5 stars A perhaps unlikely love story Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 28, 2014 Verified Purchase The setting is late December 1958. In the decadent, brash, glitzy 'sin city' that is downtown Havana the casinos are awash with American gamblers and revellers, partying with carefree abandon, and seemingly oblivious to the harsh reality that Batista's regime is about to collapse, and the Cuban revolutionaries under Castro and Guevara are only days away from entering the capital. Into this impending maelstrom comes Jack Weil (Robert Redford), a carefree, middle-aged professional poker player, intent on making a killing in a high stakes game.

However, one of Jack's most timeless and accessible outfits is briefly seen over the course of a few daytime scenes as he meets with casino boss Joe Volpi (Alan Arkin) and begins making arrangements to secure Roberta's escape from Cuba. Jack's single-breasted jacket is light cream linen, appearing on screen to be just a few shades warmer than pure white, and was custom made for the production by Western Costume Company. The ventless jacket is cut consistent with Robert Redford's other tailored wear in Havana as well as trending '50s styles with wide, padded shoulders, roped sleeveheads, and narrow notch lapels that roll to a low two-button stance as well as sporty patch pockets on the left breast and both hips. Jack's light blue cotton shirt was made by Anto Beverly Hills, then known as Nat Wise of London, who has created shirts for Robert Redford since the early years of his career. This shirt's point collar is less distinctive than Jack's other shirts with their large curved "Mr. B. "

The movie itself is seriously very well written. The main appearances show a happy place in that city, but the background usually shows seriously depraved cruelty being an ongoing part of city life. While the promoted theme is a credible romance, the overview is seriously alarming. It also gives a detailed look into the lives of several professional gamblers, which expands the world those who have never seen such things or understood what was really going on. Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2017 Verified Purchase I love this movie. I originally had this film on VHS years ago. It's another twist on Casablanca, but it works. I have always thought that the acting was great, and the settings were beautiful (Dominican Republic was used to serve as the setting for Havana, the classic cars in the movie were shipped in from the US). Robert Redford, Alan Arkin, & Raul Julia played intriguing roles, not to mention Lena Olin. Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2019 Verified Purchase I'd seen this movie before but wanted to see it again after recently visiting Cuba.

Jack's watch is also yellow gold with a round gold dial and a flat gold bracelet. The hell of it is that he'll never be able to get those bloodstains out of his white linen jacket. In November 2015, the whole outfit was auctioned by Julien's Auctions with additional descriptive notes and photos. How to Get the Look When not sporting flashy colored silk or boldly printed ties, Robert Redford's Jack Weil showcases a unique example of warm-weather business casual, incorporating subtle flair with classic menswear staples.

Great story of a historical event that captures the essence of Havana in the 1950's. It's quite different today but learning more about the history of this country made circumstances today clearer. Top reviews from other countries 5. 0 out of 5 stars Life in old Havana. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 24, 2017 Verified Purchase My brother and I watched this film, which neither of us could remember seeing before. This is the same Pollack/ Redford pairing who made Out of Africa. Havana is set in the week around New Year 1958, leading up to the successful communist takeover. The rebel activity provides a nervous backdrop to the events of the story, which focus on Redford's pro gambler, and Lena Olin, wife of a supporter of the revolution. We found that the film is paced well--unhurried, just right. And the music is fantastic. Super film Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 9, 2015 Verified Purchase Robert Redford is perfectly cast, Lena Olin is superb and an early performance by Raul Julia shows what a talent was lost when he died young.

Good story, and great scenery and film of Havana, Cuban countryside and Keys in Florida. Very moving Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 16, 2014 Verified Purchase Viewing this film for the first time, I was moved to tears at the last sequence, when Robert Redford, walking near the Florida Keys, on the US side of the sea, looks towards Cuba, where he left a great love... At second seeing it impressed me less, but then it's an interesting feature of films that they don't always look the same... A sequence changes, when viewed again, as if you were creating your own movie...

This time, though, the story is set in 1958 Cuba instead of 1941 Morocco, and instead of being a heroic figure defying Hitler, the revolutionary leader is an associate of the thug, Fidel Castro. Unfortunately this cast doesn't gel like the cast of "Casablanca" did, and the film is completely lacking in the charm and intrigue that made "Casablanca" a classic. The dialogue that made so many of the lines in "Casablanca" movie standards falls completely flat in this flick with much of the interaction between Redford and Olin coming off as simply corny. Not a horrible way to spend 2 1/2 hours, but this movie isn't even in the same league as the 1942 classic it seeks to emulate. Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2019 Verified Purchase Havana may not be the greatest movie, but it definitely deserves better than this lackluster 4:3 letterbox DVD that looks like Universal hasn't touched since 1997 that came from an analog interlaced master for laserdisc. It's really too bad that Universal has a policy of not licensing films for blu-ray release by third parties if they've already got their own DVD, and then they don't care to touch the film.

Little is seen of his hosiery, though auction listings for the outfit describe an unfortunate choice of black socks. Brown would have been a more visually appealing choice of socks, coordinating with the warmer tones of the outfit while also continuing the leg line from his brown trousers. Jack Weil in his natural habitat… though the juxtaposition of Christmas decorations with such a classic warm-weather outfit could be seen as a bit unnatural. Jack wears a pair of large gold-framed aviator sunglasses with dark lenses, which I've read were made by Ray-Ban. Originally developed for American military pilots in the late 1930s, the aviator is a suitable choice for Jack Weil with his military background and adventurous spirit. Per the traditional image of a successful gambler, Jack wears gold jewelry and accessories. Havana is one of the few Robert Redford movies where the actor doesn't wear his signature silver ring that he received as a gift from the Hopi tribe in the late '60s, instead only wearing a gold signet ring on his right pinky.

Navy veteran Havana, December 1958 Film: Havana Release Date: December 14, 1990 Director: Sydney Pollack Costume Designer: Bernie Pollack Background As Memorial Day is often considered the start of the American summer fashion season, today's post explores an example of timeless warm-weather apparel sported by Robert Redford in Havana. The object of his affection is Roberta "Bobby" Duran (Lena Olin), a revolutionary sympathizer who is forced to determine if her heart remains with her husband and the revolution or the chance of a life in America with Redford's Jack Weil. What'd He Wear? Jack Weil's wardrobe of flashy suits and silk sport jackets are ideal for a smooth professional gambler making the rounds of poker tables in late 1950s Havana.
