I'm a longtime lurker on this subreddit, though - as far as I recall - I've never so much as even replied in comment herein. I love reading the discussions posted here, but I'm not as smart, I guess, as most of y'all. I admire these films, and I admire your words about them, but I don't think I can write as well as you all. That said, forgive the bluntness of this post... I have long been an admirer of the dissolve edit, and the oftentimes beautiful and telling images which come as a result of it. I recently watched Cruising (1980), and though I was for the most part underwhelmed by the movie as a whole, I was struck by the significance of the final dissolve. In the first [part of the final] scene, Al Pacino's character is standing at the mirror in his girlfriend's apartment, shaving his face. From there, there's the final dissolve to a skyline/river scene - presumably NYC, the city in which Pacino's character walked the beat in search of the killer who's been haunting the city's gay bars in search of victims.
