The film shows him looking back nostalgically on his time with Electra, with most of his recollections involving sex. A lot of time is spent on Murphy's penis, which in one stand out scene ejaculates directly into the camera lens in long, forceful bursts. Perhaps it was inevitable, given the format. Triad: Glusman and Muyuck with Klara Kristin as Omi. "The English-speaking movie world is afraid of the penis, " says Noé. "It doesn't seem that different to me: shooting my hand or shooting my penis. " Does he really thinks that? Surely filming a penis is more loaded? "You're just used to seeing a hand, " he says. "Even hands with guns seem far more normal. And that's a major cultural western problem. " Love is sometimes hard to take seriously. The inclusion of the audience-immersing ejaculation got the crowd hooting in Cannes. But there are self-referential nods. Murphy is an aspiring film-maker, who wants to make movies out of "blood, sperm and tears". Many of the characters are named after people close to the director.

"The only violence in the whole film is how people who are madly in love insult each other. " It appears to be a change of direction, then, for a director who gave audiences a 30-second warning to leave the cinema before the close of his 1998 film I Stand Alone. (The film ended with scenes of incestuous sexual abuse. ) 2... in 3D Noé has said that he wanted his film to offer an immersive experience of sex, and coupled with his existing fascination with 3D, he decided to make the shift into the other dimension. "I felt that 3D would allow the viewer a greater sense of identification with the lead character and his nostalgic state, " he explained. Noé added that he regretted not shooting his last film, Enter the Void (2009), in the medium, particularly a point-of-view sequence that travels up a woman's fallopian tube. 3. Two of the film's stars haven't acted before Aomi Muyock, a Swiss model (pictured above), and Klara Kristin both make their screen debuts in Love. Noé talked about his casting process in a 2014 interview with Bomb magazine.

"I want to make movies out of blood, sperm and tears, " he tells Electra, while Mr. Noé's self-references multiply. A dauntingly gifted filmmaker who too often can't get out of his own way, Mr. Noé seems determined to extol his own daring. But other filmmakers have dived into bodily fluids with similar gusto and rather more substance and wisdom, including Patrice Chéreau, with his gut-punching 2001 drama, "Intimacy, " and Catherine Breillat in her carnal odyssey, "Romance" (1999). Unlike, say, John Cameron Mitchell's ebullient 2006 romp, "Shortbus" (a movie fairly trembling with sexual delirium), these earlier films share with "Love" a caul of despair that lends a wistfulness to every coupling. They seem to recognize that, however explosive the coming, it's the going that tears you apart. "Love" is not rated. Running time: 2 hours 14 minutes.

Everything we know about Gaspar Noe's Love

Many of these squelchy encounters have a dreamy eroticism and a hazy beauty that owe less to the performers (though one threesome is like the naughtiest game of Twister ever) than to the significant skills of the cinematographer, Benoît Debie. Hovering above the dancing tongues and torsos, or sitting quietly alongside them, his camera calmly observes without resorting to tricks or distractions. This visual tranquillity, along with the characters' heightened emotions, strips the film of salaciousness and highlights the only conversation it cares about: The one that runs from between the legs to between the ears. In the context of a movie-rating culture that, in America at least, has deemed the orgasm more offensive than the Uzi, "Love" has a touching innocence that diverges radically from Mr. Noé's back catalog. Lacking both the stylistic bling of his trippy 2010 feature, "Enter the Void, " and the shocking violence of "Irrevérsible" (2002), this latest venture casts the writer and director less as provocateur than as evangelist.

The story opens with a present-day Murphy receiving a phone call from Electra's anxious mother, which draws him into memories of his insatiable affair with her daughter. 6. There may be walkouts when it screens Two-hundred-and-fifty people walked out of the Cannes premiere of Irréversible in 2002, with many of them leaving even before its notoriously disturbing rape scene. Enter the Void and I Stand Alone sparked similar reactions at festivals and screenings. Early reports from the blog Paris Match hint that Love's opening sequence will result in similar walkouts. Noé has publicly expressed his hope that this is a film "to make girls cry and give boys hard-ons. " 7. Its US distributors want to show it uncensored Alchemy Films has picked up the US rights to Love, and the company has said it "will do everything we can to protect this masterful film". According to The Hollywood Reporter, Love might be released unrated: the strategy Lionsgate adopted when it distributed Irréversible. However getting the film into cinemas which are set up for 3D may be a challenge; and it's unclear whether Netflix, which hosts Alchemy titles, will show an uncut version of the film.
