Common Sense Note Parents need to know that Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is a classic musical comedy full of dated stereotypes. "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" is a popular song from the movie but also the main theme, with the importance of finding a rich husband strongly emphasized. Women are mostly portrayed as dumb vixens, men are taken in by a pretty face, and everyone smokes and drinks. But, although sexual innuendo is thrown around a lot, no more than a few sensual kisses are shown. Most tweens and teens won't have much interest unless they're die-hard musical fans. Sexual Content Although no actual sex is shown, characters are shown kissing and embracing. The entire premise is about using your sexuality to entice a man into marriage or an affair. Lorelei (Marilyn Monroe) and Dorothy (Jane Russell) are best friends and a pair of showgirls headed for Paris. Lorelei is going to marry her rich fiancé, Danny, there; and Dorothy is serving as her "chaperone" on the cross-Atlantic sailing. While Lorelei is going to be marrying well, she can't help but be on the lookout for diamonds; and while Dorothy strives to keep her out of trouble, she finds herself falling for the private investigator that Danny's father has hired to keep an eye on his potential daughter-in-law. This is an absolute classic among movie musicals -- with showstoppers like "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend", "Bye Bye Baby", and "Isn't Anyone Here For Love" -- in eye-poppingly gorgeous Technicolor. That's OK if you just need to know about the film, but it can be confusing if you want to be sure about the quality. So my review is for the 20th Century Fox Home Ent DVD released 9 April 2012, with big pic of Marilyn (only) with her arms raised, and the incorrect billing off MM first then Jane. I admit to being a bit surprised at the 4. 3 ratio (bars at both sides), when the reverse DVD cover plainly says 16. 9 ratio, which, to me means it should fill the whole screen. However, 4. 3 or not, this is a wonderful transfer, brilliant colour, crisp clear picture, slightly variable sound (the musical numbers), and good optional subtitles. No extras, but a terrific price (currently my copy £4. 40). Howard Hawks was a muti talented director. This is the man who gave us "Red River", and this sparkiling, fun musical with both stars on top form.
It's sheer fun, and it captures that happy, carefree spirit of the '50s in a way few films do. Highly recommended. Not only does "Gentlemen Prefer Blonds" pass the Bechdel test in some ways, but it has a really brilliant choreographed musical number where a fully clothed Jane Russell is being backed up by a chorus line of almost-naked boyz. Lorelei and Dorothy are both really practical in their different ways. The plot is pretty much a farce (which I love). The musical numbers are a lot of fun- and "Diamonds are a Girl's Best friend" is iconic, both as a sentiment and as a visual. And, oh! the gorgeous CLOTHES! Now- one thing I do wonder- did DeBeers pay for product placement here? because they were doing a serious push to make diamonds be seen as intrinsically valuable starting in the 1940s, and this was filmed in 1953. For the record- diamonds are NOT especially valuable; if you want to invest in material goods, gold- and physical gold, not certificates- would be the way to go.

MM couldn't act to save her life here, but you can't keep your eyes off her. Sheer magic, and her song "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" surely ranks as one of Hollywood's great musical numbers/scenes. Speaking of songs/ 20 mins in there is the most wonderful, utterly camp number I can ever remember wife and I actually laughed out loud it was so dances and shimmies around 20 very fit nearly nude young men dressed in flesh coloured briefs. It has to be seen to be believed, and even 87 minutes there isn't a dull moment. It's a shame that the 2 leading men are dull compared to the ladies, but any actor of the time (except perhaps for Mitchum) would have been hard pressed to compete. Russell or Monroe? Monroe or Russell. Two so different actresses and they compliment each other perfectly. Dated yes, but still great fun.
