I won't detail the plot much for those few who have not seen it, but the story revolves around a writer (Ben Mears) who returns to his small home town in central Maine to write about a supposed haunted house (the Marston house). Unfortunately, he finds that a new owner has taken possession of the house and he begins to ask around as he builds material for his new book. Suffice to say, I think many viewers in 1980 got more than the bargained for when they tuned in. This "mini-series" directed by master director Tobe Hooper is far scarier than many large budget horror movies. Definitely five stars for both scare content and overall story! In my original review, I focused on the fact, that the DVD was in fact, the complete unedited version of the original television presentation of Salem's Lot. I have just acquired the Blu Ray disc, and I am pleased to report, it is also the same unedited version.

I saw Salem's Lot in HD on Encore 2 years ago, and I thought that version wasn't average. This one blows that one away. As of now, this Blu Ray is tough to find. I was able to track one down at my local FYE. Amazon is offering it now, as a pre-order, which is odd since it has been released (IT was also released yesterday... I have that one as look amazing). So, do yourself a favor. If you have the DVD, this is worth the upgrade. This gets my highest recommendation. This film doesn't disappoint and is full of creepy scenes. What surprises me is how good it looks (It is standard 4:3 ratio, so black bars are on the side of HD TVs) and how well those creepy scenes still work, especially the boy floating at the window saying, "Let me in!

I won't go into the details in this review, but if you would like to know how I determined it was the unedited version, please refer to my Salem's Lot DVD review on Amazon. So, let's talk about the Blu Ray quality. It is outstanding. This does not appear to be the same transfer as the DVD. It's pretty clean. There is some film grain that I didn't notice on the DVD, but that's because it's a great transfer. The grain is slight, so it's not really an issue, just a natural part of film. The colors are vivid, the audio sounds great, and the clarity is outstanding for a 1979 production. I saw details, I was never able to see in the DVD. It is in full screen 1:37, so you will have the black bars on the sides, just as the regular DVD did. There is an audio commentary by Tobe Hooper. As of now, I haven't heard the entire commentary, but from the bits and pieces I played, he does add some interesting doesn't talk all the time (as this is over 3 hours), but from what little I saw, he adds some interesting info.

You get a 3 hour version, 4:3 aspect with a mono soundtrack and an optional audio commentary by director Tobe Hooper Wasn't bought expecting too much for a tv mini-series from around 1978 to be honest but the picture quality was more than satisfactory for my 55" tv and the sound stands up decently On reflection, it is clear where the film "Fright Night" got many of its ideas from Blu Ray terror! Evidently, they thought this movie would not be that bad since it was shown on national television as a mini-series about 1980. Well they may not have suffered, but Salem's Lot (based on the Stephen King book of the same name) sure scared the s#@! out of me. From the floating boy to Barlow crashing through the window to the final basement scene, I had bad dreams on and off for three weeks at age 7. Of course years have since passed, and I decided to watch it again now as an adult to see if it still bothered me. I was surprised to find that it is still pretty scary even in this late age when so many are used to ultra realistic movies with blood or gore. So much about the movie that is scary is just that, not blood or gore, but a building psychological fright that chills the spine.
