It tells a much simpler story with a strong emotional core, complete with a dastardly, scary villain. The biggest problem is, despite Dead Men Tell No Tales being so streamlined, it often ends up feeling like it's still padding its story out. Things start well enough. A young boy named Henry is hellbent on saving his father Will Turner, Orlando Bloom's character, who was dammed to the sea a few films back. Henry swears he'll do whatever it takes to save his father from his curse. Later we'll meet Carina (Kaya Scodelario), who has similar desires. The child-questing-for-his/her-parents is a standard fantasy story, but it's an emotionally solid one, which is why it's so ubiquitous. It makes it easy to invest in both Henry and Carina, despite being all-new characters. Carina (Kaya Scodelario) and Henry (Brenton Thwaites). Nine years later after the prologue, Henry is grown up (played by Brenton Thwaites) and still on his quest. He believes the only thing that can break his father's curse is the mythic Trident of Poseidon and the one person who can help him find it is dad's old friend, Jack Sparrow.

I think more so than the story they were trying to convey, the execution was excellent. So why 3 stars instead of 4? Because overall the movie was lackluster. The first time I watched it I watched it alone, and was only mildly interested and invested. It was only when I watched it with my Family that it became a better movie. There is a word for that that's just on the tip of my tongue... oh well. Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2017 Verified Purchase I watched this as an Amazon rental. The first half dragged, literally, so tedious, including the wayyyy too long dragging(pun intended) of the bank through the streets of St Martin. The exposition to show where we were and how we got there included the young but boring new young couple. They added nothing and I hoped for our old earthy friends Captain Barbossa and his monkey, who did appear but briefly, early on. Jack Sparrow was a pale shadow of himself as well, although how he began and got his name was a lift. I was going to give this 3 stars max, but then like being at some operas, the next act took off.

The Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan replacements were okay as long as you don't compare them too closely to their aforementioned counterparts. What was the most interesting thing about this movie? It was Barbosa and the (very) slight redemption story that they gave him. His high seas pirate has previously outshone Sparrow's from time to time but here he thoroughly outshines Sparrow. And that's not what I really want out of a Pirates movie. I don't know if there's much blood left in this franchise but the filmmakers are still going to take our gold as long as we're willing to watch them through whatever spyglass we can find. 2. 75 stars. The absolute worst of the franchise. Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2018 Verified Purchase This movie could have been a real story, and at times, bits of a story shined through an otherwise forgettable knot of contrived plotlines and hollow acting, especially when it focused less on Depp's cringe-worthy typecast role and more on the increasingly distant relationship between Henry and Will and the essentially unknown bond between Cassina and Barbossa.

Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2018 Verified Purchase While I didn't think the fourth Pirates movie was that bad or that great it was passable entertainment. When the first 20 minutes of "Dead Men Tell No Tales" flopped and flakked its way through a Caribbean town it had me thoroughly bored and thinking, "Man, the writing in this movie is just lazy. " Fortunately after the movie seemed to get out of its own way in reintroducing the audience to the old characters (was that really necessary? ) it got a little better. Mind you, a little, so that's not saying much. Barbosa's Spanish ghost captain spittling black tarrish blood from his mouth wasn't that interesting. The desiccated sharks weren't that interesting. The notion that Jack Sparrow was only safe on land wasn't that interesting. Even Johnny Depp didn't play his Jack Sparrow as anything other than an obnoxious drunk castabout who has quickly lost his charm.

Johnny Depp returns to what's come to be his signature character, and though he's still entertaining to watch, he never quite feels like he fits into Henry's story. He's still dumb old Jack, chasing money and women, with little to no sense of empathy. G/O Media may get a commission Henry is also driven toward Jack when he meets the evil ghost pirate Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem)\, who's looking for Jack. Henry meets Carina, who is also after the Trident. There's even the reappearance of Captain Barbosa (Geoffrey Rush), who also inserts himself into the story. All of these story beats work to keep the film moving, but also push the focus away from the emotional core of the film. More grievously, a lot of it feels much too coincidental. While all this may sound like there's a lot going on in Dead Men, there really isn't. The actual story remains simple: Everyone wants the Trident, and the bad guys also want Jack Sparrow. At times it feels like all of these characters and storylines are force-fed together to pad the runtime of the movie.
