The focus instead falls on the music, and it's in the recording studio and on stage where these four rather ordinary blokes function as an extraordinary whole. And it's also where Whitecross's film really reaches out to the fans. Martin's earliest musical foray as keyboard player in school band the Rockin' Honkies provides a few titters, but also serves to illustrate his long friendship with Phil Harvey, who played alongside him then and would go on to become Coldplay's first manager and official fifth member. Also caught for posterity is Coldplay's first gig in January 1998, when they went by the name of Starfish. The band claim they were nervous as hell, but Martin looks in his element. Despite the film's democratic intentions, it's hardly surprising that the singer emerges as its dominant personality. Martin is a human pogo-stick of energy, radiating positive vibes that irk or inspire depending on your temperament. But for all his talent and charm, it is gratifying that we get to glimpse a less affable side of the golden boy.

Lisa Donato, whose credits include "Signature Move" and "There You Are, " is directing. The cast includes Jackson Robert Scott, Sprague Grayden, Shane West, Ethan Suplee, Franklin Ojeda Smith and transgender actress Alexandra Grey. The 1986-set project tells the story of a 10-year-old, uprooted from the big city and unceremoniously moved to a small town where he is forced to spend a lonely summer bearing witness to his parents' disintegrating marriage. He ends up befriending his new next-door neighbors, a recently retired English professor and his transgender daughter, Gossamer. Nick Adams, director of Transgender Media & Representation at GLAAD, advised the project during pre-production. "It is gratifying that the TRANSform Hollywood guide is helping filmmakers find the resources they need to tell authentic, accurate stories about transgender people, " Adams said. "'Gossamer Folds' is a rare story about a friendship between a young boy and a trans woman. I look forward to seeing a film that moves beyond the typical transition narrative and explores a trans woman's relationship with her father, her friends, and her community.

At times he's quite witty. During the video shoot for "The Scientist, " in 2002, Martin looks at the camera and says, "Four chords and now all this. " Given the rather elemental nature of their songs, those words more or less summarize Coldplay's entire career. Of course, "A Head Full of Dreams" has been constructed to leave out the discord (at one point Martin turns to Whitecross's camera and says, "You don't film any of the arguments"). Even so, there's no denying that Coldplay, as a band, has had a remarkably happy and seamless existence. It's there in the steadiness of their 20-year rise, and in the delectable ice-cream smoothness of their hooks and harmonies — the way they achieve an epic caress of emotion. By the time their chief role models, U2 and R. E. M., had been around for a couple of decades, they were battle-scarred, and each band had reinvented itself a few times, but the closest Coldplay comes to that in "A Head Full of Dreams" is going through a vague "dark period" after Phil Harvey, the band's creative director and unofficial fifth member, cuts out.

But while his bandmates are happy to fade into the background, Martin – part puppy dog, part jack-in-the-box – is a magnet for the camera. He's restless, funny, insecure and likeable – often all at the same time. Only the band's confetti-strewn stadium gigs, seemingly choreographed by a drunk Italian wedding planner, are as irrepressible as he is.
